Modern Grading: How to Use Linear and Square Root Scaling

A guide for educators on how to fairly adjust test scores using mathematical scaling models.

Fair Scaling: Linear vs. Square Root Curves

Sometimes a test is harder than intended. As an educator, how do you adjust grades without losing the integrity of the assessment?

Classroom

The Square Root Curve (10√x)

This popular method helps students on the lower end more than those at the top.

  • A raw score of 64 becomes an 80 (√64 = 8, 8*10 = 80).
  • A raw score of 81 becomes a 90.

How-To: Scale Your Class in Bulk

  1. Paste your list of raw scores.
  2. Select your target system (US, French, or German).
  3. Export the final results to Excel for your gradebook.
